Springfield Illinois is Horseshoe Mecca. Most restaurants have at least one horseshoe on the menu. Even upscale establishments serve horseshoe-inspired dishes.

Sgt Pepper’s and Jungle Jim’s Cafe are great.
Red Coach also had great ‘shoe till they closed. Mike and John’s (a Godfather’s chain) used the original Red Coach recipe at the same location. Sadly, they have closed recently too.

I lived in Springfield as a child and recently went back to visit family for a few days and during my visit I had 3 horseshoes in 3 days. I love them! I came home to Cincinnati and wanted to try and make my own and as we all know the cheese sauce is the key. I cant seem to make anything that tastes like they do there. Any suggestions on a certain type and brand of cheese to buy to make a great tasting cheese sauce?

Eureaka!! On my way home to Wisconsin from Springfield, I stopped at Delaney’s Family Restaurant in Oglesby, Il, and GUESS WHAT?
They have a horseshoe on the menu that is pretty darn good (not a Leland Hotel “shoe” or a Red Coach–but worth a stop).
Also found that Route 15 in Appleton, Wi has one–but they don’t know how to make it right–I am coaching them–but they use 2″ thick Texas Toast and a burger that resembles a big meatball–more work required.
